Micro-Nurseries

What Will Happen To The Plants The Micro-Nurseries Produce?

Once the seedlings have grown for 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 years and are larger and more durable, with established root systems, they will be collected by volunteers with pickup trucks, and transported to where habitat restoration organizations are restoring a site. The seedlings will be planted at the site by the habitat restoration organization employees or by volunteers, possibly including some Grow it Forward members.

The replanted seedlings will grow into a new forest of native trees and other vegetation, eventually producing their own seeds to make the next generation.

The photos below show the steps in distributing the finished seedlings.

Seedlings grow over the years in their new home like this site, shown about 4 years after planting. In a few more years, the trees and shrubs will shade this stream, reducing water temperatures to levels that are healthy for salmon.
